Humans can be puzzling—and at times, heartbreakingly cruel—when it comes to how they treat their dogs. It’s hard to comprehend the level of neglect and abuse some animals endure. What we see—the physical wounds, the matted fur, the starvation—is disturbing enough. But what we don’t see—the fear in their eyes, the emotional scars, the confusion from being betrayed by the only humans they’ve ever known—is even more heartbreaking. I often ask myself: How can someone inflict harm on a living, breathing soul and then abandon them to survive on their own in an harsh environment?
Not long ago, Max’s Ark Rescue received a call from Animal Services in Naples about a small dog in desperate need of help. Buddy, a senior Maltese, had been found wandering the streets and brought into the shelter. He was labeled a “stray” and placed on the standard five-day hold. At first, shelter staff believed someone out there must be frantically looking for him—a beloved family dog lost and in need of reunion.
But that hope quickly vanished. The person who brought Buddy in—the one who “found” him—was in fact his owner.

Buddy’s condition was heartbreaking. He was blind, disoriented, and covered in scabs. His fur was patchy from neglect, his ears were severely infected, and his spirit was clearly broken. The shelter’s veterinarian, seeing how much pain he was in, considered the possibility that humane euthanasia might be the kindest option. But the shelter staff weren’t ready to give up. They believed he deserved one more chance and reached out to us.
We said yes.

We knew the road ahead would be difficult. Buddy is old. His body is fragile. His heart has been through more than we’ll ever fully understand. But even with all that, we knew he deserved to feel love—maybe for the first time in his life. He deserved to spend his final chapter clean, safe, and cherished. And when his time comes, he should leave this world in the warmth of human arms, not alone in a cold metal cage.
When Buddy first arrived at his foster home, he was terrified. He flinched at touch and didn’t seem to understand that anyone could care about him. It was clear he had never known kindness or safety. But over time, that began to change. Slowly. Gently.
Now, months later, Buddy is a different dog. His foster mom says he’s doing beautifully. He follows her voice, knows when it’s mealtime, and has developed trust. His skin has healed, the ulcers are gone, and although he will remain blind, he navigates his world with newfound confidence. Most importantly, he knows he is loved.
Buddy may not have years ahead of him, but for however long he has left, he will live with dignity. He will experience peace, safety, and affection. And that—after everything he’s been through—is the very least he deserves.
