Mother’s Day is filled with flowers, cards, and celebrations of the women who loved us into who we are. But this year, we want to pause — just for a moment — and remember a different kind of mother. One who never received a card. One who never chose this path. One whose babies were taken from her again and again, in the name of profit. She is the rescue mama dog. And her story deserves to be told.

At Max’s Ark Rescue, we always start with a plan. When we take in a group of dogs with medical needs, we carefully allocate funds to cover essentials like spay/neuter, vaccinations, and necessary (non-life-threatening) procedures. We work hard to make sure every dog is on the path to a healthy, happy future.

When we rescued this tiny Yorkie, we knew something wasn’t right. She wasn’t just shy or unsure… she was hurting. Really hurting. You could see it in the way she moved, the way she looked at us, the quiet way she tried to endure it.

The other day, someone asked me why we “charge so much” for a rescue dog — especially when shelters and humane societies practically give them away.
