Recently on Nextdoor, a woman shared her alarming experience with bug-infested dog food. She discovered the spoiled and recently opened bag of Purina Pro Plan dog food after feeding it to her dog for several days. Unfortunately, her pet began vomiting and developed diarrhea. She didn’t realize the food was the culprit until she opened the container and moths flew out. Shockingly, the local pet store where she purchased the dog food refused to take responsibility.
The takeaway from this story? Feed your pets like family. Only feed them human-grade food, and if possible, consider making your own dog food. The fewer the additives and preservatives, the better. Many pet parents invest in pet insurance, but the best insurance is right under their noses: a healthy, human-grade diet for their furry companions.
There were 10 Dog Food Recalls in 2024 and in 2023, there were also 16 dog food brands recalled, underscoring the importance of vigilance when choosing pet food.
Insure Your Pet’s Health with Homemade Food
Making your own dog food is easier than you might think and can lead to significant health benefits for your pet, including fewer vet visits, less itching, and more energy. Max’s Ark has created a “Tail Wagging Delights” recipe booklet to help you get started. You can download the PDF here.
When our little rescue Della, joined our home, I wasn’t immediately ready to make her food from scratch. Instead, I opted for Wysong Epigen Turkey canned dog food (97% ground meat) and supplemented it with freshly cooked green beans and sweet potatoes. Occasionally, I’d add oatmeal or brown rice, and sometimes, she’d enjoy fresh fish. For snacks, her favorite is carrots. She LOVES her meals, and our vet encourages us to continue feeding her this way because she’s thriving.
One critical discovery we made was her severe allergy to chicken and eggs, which caused relentless itching. Once we eliminated those from her diet, her health improved dramatically.
I hope you’ll find our ‘Tail-wagging Delights‘ recipe booklet helpful. Whatever you do, please prioritize your pet’s health by choosing only human-grade food!
