Candice and John had always been animal lovers. Throughout their long marriage, they had shared their home with various pets—cats, dogs, and even a parrot named Charlie. When they reached their mid 70’s, they decided that their lives wouldn’t be complete without the companionship of another dog. Despite their advanced age, they adopted a puppy and named him Odin.

Odin brought joy and energy into their lives. His playful antics and boundless affection filled their days with laughter. He quickly became the center of their world, and they doted on him as if he were their child. Odin was always by their side, never leaving them alone for long. He was happiest when curled up on John’s lap or following Candice around the house, his little tail wagging with delight.

However, as Odin grew, so did the challenges that come with aging. When Odin turned two years old, John suffered a major heart attack. It was a devastating blow to the couple. John, who had always been active and full of life, was now frail and weak, unable to care for Odin the way he once had. Candice, heartbroken by her husband’s condition, suddenly found herself struggling to manage both her husband’s needs and Odin’s boundless energy.

She was no longer the strong, capable woman she once was, and taking care of Odin became increasingly difficult. The little dog, once so loved and cherished, became a source of stress for Candice. She knew she couldn’t keep up with his needs, but the thought of parting with him was unbearable.

It was a heartbreaking moment for Candice, leaving behind the home she had shared with John and Odin, but she knew it was the right choice. Her family, though well-meaning, took Odin in, thinking they could provide him with the love and care he deserved.

Now, he was left alone for hours while his new parents were at work. The loneliness and confusion took a toll on Odin, and he began to act out. He chewed on furniture, tore up shoes, and caused destruction wherever he could. It wasn’t out of malice—he was simply a frightened, lonely dog who missed his family.

Odin’s story is a sobering reminder of the importance of planning for your pets’ future. Candice and John loved Odin dearly, but they hadn’t considered what might happen if they were no longer able to care for him. Odin, who had once been a beloved member of their family, was now just another abandoned dog in need of a home.

Is your pet a family member? Have you planned for your pet’s future in the event of your death? Don’t leave your beloved pets’ fate to chance. Make sure you have a plan in place to ensure they are cared for and loved, no matter what life may bring. It’s the kindest thing you can do for the animals who give us so much unconditional love.
