Hello! My name is Caprisse, and I’m a 3-year-old miniature Poodle with a beautiful chocolate coat and an even sweeter personality. I came from a breeder, and now I’m ready for a fresh start where I can finally be someone’s whole world.

I’m affectionate, playful, clever, and very people-oriented. I love to communicate, cuddle, and be right by your side—whether we’re playing, training, or relaxing together.
I’m fully vetted, spayed, vaccinated, and ready to go home. Because of my background and sensitive nature, I need an experienced adopter who understands poodles and can provide structure, consistency, and lots of affection.

If you’re looking for a loyal, devoted companion who wants nothing more than to be your one true shadow, I may be your perfect match.

The heartbreaking truth is simple: it only takes one mosquito bite to put a dog’s life at risk. Mosquitoes are active during the winter in Southwest Florida , as the subtropical climate allows them to persist 12 months a year. While populations decrease when temperatures drop below 50°F, they do not completely disappear and quickly become active again during warmer winter days.

A Message From Max’s Ark Rescue

At Max’s Ark Rescue, we see firsthand the devastating effects of heartworm disease far too often. It is one of the most serious — and most preventable — diseases affecting dogs, especially those who come from neglect, abandonment, or uncertain pasts.

The heartbreaking truth is simple: it only takes one mosquito bite to put a dog’s life at risk.

Just One Bite Can Change Everything

Heartworm disease is transmitted through mosquito bites. When a mosquito bites an infected animal, it picks up microscopic heartworm larvae. When that same mosquito bites a dog, those larvae enter the dog’s bloodstream and begin their destructive journey.

Mosquitoes are everywhere — indoors and outdoors — and no dog is ever truly “safe” without protection. This is why heartworm prevention is essential for dogs of every age, from puppies to seniors.

Why Senior Dogs Are Especially at Risk

Senior dogs deserve special attention when it comes to heartworm disease. As dogs age, their hearts, lungs, and immune systems naturally become more fragile. When heartworms are present, the damage is often more severe and progresses more quickly.

In senior dogs, heartworm disease can:

Exacerbate existing heart or lung conditions

Increase fatigue and weakness

Make breathing more difficult

Reduce quality of life

Complicate treatment and recovery

Many senior dogs already have limited energy or mobility. Heartworm disease places even more strain on their bodies, often stealing precious comfort and time they deserve in their golden years.

What We See in Heartworm-Positive Dogs

Once inside a dog’s body, heartworm larvae mature and migrate to the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels. Over time, these worms grow long and thick, restricting blood flow and oxygen.

Dogs may suffer from:

Persistent coughing

Difficulty breathing

Weight loss

Exercise intolerance

Heart and lung damage

In severe cases, heart failure or sudden death

Sadly, senior dogs may show subtle signs that are easily mistaken for “just slowing down.” By the time symptoms are obvious, the disease is often advanced.

Why Heartworm Testing Is Critical — Especially for Seniors

Annual heartworm testing is vital for all dogs, but it is especially important for seniors. Early detection allows for safer treatment planning and helps avoid life-threatening complications.

Testing:

Identifies infection before symptoms worsen

Ensures preventatives are given safely

Helps protect already vulnerable hearts and lungs

Allows rescues like Max’s Ark to provide appropriate care

Every dog that enters Max’s Ark Rescue is tested, because we believe knowledge is the first step in protection.

Treatment Is Possible — But Harder on Older Dogs

Heartworm disease is treatable, but the process is demanding — and it can be especially challenging for senior dogs.

Treatment often includes:

Painful injections

Long periods of strict crate rest

Risk of blood clots and complications

Significant stress on the heart and lungs

For older dogs, recovery can take longer, and the risks are higher. We have seen senior dogs struggle through treatment, and it is heartbreaking to watch them endure something that could have been prevented.

Prevention Is the Kindest Gift You Can Give

Heartworm prevention is safe, effective, and far easier on a dog’s body than treatment. Monthly preventatives stop the disease before it starts, protecting dogs throughout every stage of life.

For senior dogs in particular, prevention:

Reduces strain on aging organs

Preserves comfort and mobility

Protects quality of life

Helps them enjoy their golden years

Our Promise — and Our Plea

At Max’s Ark Rescue, our promise is to protect every dog in our care, especially our seniors, who have already given so much love in their lives.

Our plea is simple: test yearly and prevent monthly.

Heartworm disease is entirely preventable, but only if we act. When you protect your dog — especially a senior dog — from heartworm disease, you are giving them the chance to live longer, breathe easier, and enjoy the comfort they deserve.

Because no dog, at any age, should suffer from something that can be prevented.

That quiet stretch between Christmas and New Year’s has a special kind of magic. The gifts are unwrapped, the big meals are behind us, and time seems to slow down just a bit. In Southwest Florida—especially here in Naples—it’s the perfect time to unplug, enjoy the gorgeous winter weather, and soak up quality time with your dog.

While much of the country is bundled up, we’re enjoying sunshine, cool breezes, and endless opportunities to be outside with our four-legged companions. Here are some wonderful ways to make the most of this in-between week with your pup.

Take a Beach Walk (Because We Can!)

Winter is prime time for beach walks in Naples. The temperatures are comfortable, the humidity is low, and the sand is cool on paws. Early mornings and evenings are especially peaceful—and many dogs love the sound of the waves and the wide-open space.

Even if your pup isn’t a swimmer, a long shoreline stroll, sniffing the salty air and watching seabirds, is great mental and physical enrichment.

Pro tip: Always check local rules for dog-friendly beach hours and bring fresh water to rinse sandy paws afterward.

Visit a Dog Park

Naples has several well-loved dog parks where pups can safely run, play, and socialize. After the hustle of the holidays, letting your dog burn off energy in a fenced, open space can be a gift for both of you.

These cooler winter days are ideal for playtime without overheating—and you might even make a new human or canine friend along the way.

Explore a Nature Trail or Preserve

Southwest Florida is full of beautiful walking paths and nature preserves. Leashed walks through shaded trails give your dog new sights and smells while keeping things calm and controlled.

This is a great option for senior dogs, shy dogs, or those who prefer a quieter adventure over busy parks or beaches.

Enjoy a Dog-Friendly Patio

Naples is known for its outdoor dining, and many local spots welcome dogs on their patios. Grab a coffee, enjoy brunch, or just relax with a cold drink while your pup lounges at your feet.

The slower pace of this week makes it a great time to:

Teach a new trick

Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise, especially after the excitement (and extra treats!) of the holidays.

Between Christmas and New Year’s isn’t about rushing—it’s about presence. Long walks, extra snuggles, unhurried mornings, and time spent together remind us why dogs are such an important part of our lives.

In a season full of noise and activity, these quieter days are a gift. And here in Southwest Florida, we’re lucky enough to enjoy them outdoors, in the sunshine, with our dogs by our side.

However you choose to spend this time, your dog doesn’t need anything fancy—just you.

Here’s to fresh air, wagging tails, and making memories as we step into a brand-new year together.

Recently, we’ve seen a painful trend that reminds us exactly why our adoption policies are in place.

Last week, two different families contacted us about surrendering elderly dogs. These weren’t just any dogs — they were pets that had belonged to their parents, dogs they had promised to care for when those parents passed away. And yet, for various reasons, they could no longer keep them.

Then, a 92-year-old woman reached out. She’s preparing to move into assisted living and, with a heavy heart, is surrendering her 5-year-old furry family member.

For the dogs, these moments are devastating. They lose their familiar home, their daily routines, and the humans they’ve bonded with. For rescue dogs — many of whom have already endured neglect, abandonment, or trauma — losing their “forever” family a second time is especially heartbreaking.

Why We Have Age Requirements

Some people question why we have strict age guidelines for adopting our dogs. We often hear:

“I’m 76, but I’m healthy and active — I can take care of a dog.”

And that may be true today. But aging is unpredictable. A young dog can live 15 to 18 years. That’s a long commitment, and while the risk may not seem significant for you personally, it is significant for the dog.

When circumstances change — illness, injury, financial hardship, or a move into assisted living — the dog faces losing their home and their person. Even when family members step in, as we’ve seen lately, promises made in love can still be broken by life’s realities.

It’s Not About You — It’s About the Dog

Our policies are not meant to be hurtful or exclusionary. They are meant to protect the animals we rescue. We want every dog to experience the security of a true forever home, not one that may end unexpectedly.

By matching each dog with an adopter who is most likely to be able to care for them for their full lifetime, we reduce the risk of future surrenders — and the heartbreak that comes with them.

Forever Means Forever

At Max’s Ark Rescue, our mission is to give each dog their best chance at a happy, secure life. That means sometimes saying “no” in the present to prevent heartbreak in the future.

To everyone who supports us in putting the needs of the dogs first — thank you. Your understanding helps us stand strong for the animals who depend on us.

Because in rescue, forever should mean forever.

I recently came across a study conducted in Japan that sought to answer an amusing yet intriguing question: Do dogs judge their humans? Well, guess what? They do! And honestly, I’m not surprised.

The study, conducted by researchers at Kyoto University, found that dogs can assess human competence. The researchers observed how dogs reacted to people who were either helpful or unhelpful in performing tasks. The results showed that dogs preferred to interact with those who demonstrated competence and were less inclined to engage with those who struggled or were perceived as unreliable. (You can read more about the study here.)

This explains a lot about my little Shih Tzu’s behavior. Whenever she doesn’t get her way or isn’t immediately included in an activity, she plops herself down on the floor with her back to me, her tiny, fluffy butt pointed in my direction as if to say, “You don’t deserve to see my cute face.” It’s the ultimate form of silent judgment, and she executes it flawlessly.

I used to think this was just a quirky trait of Tibetan dogs like Shih Tzus, who were bred for companionship and spent their days lounging in the laps of royalty. Their job was to observe and be present, so naturally, they’ve developed an innate ability to gauge human behavior. But now, with scientific backing, I can say with certainty—my dog is absolutely judging me.

It makes sense, really. Dogs are keen observers of human behavior, picking up on our body language, emotions, and actions. They know when we’re being unfair (like when one dog gets a treat and the other doesn’t), they recognize when we’re not paying attention (cue the guilty look when they steal a sock), and apparently, they can determine if we’re competent or not.

So, the next time you fumble while trying to open a snack bag or struggle with your shoelaces, don’t be surprised if you catch your dog staring at you with an expression that seems to say, “Really? You’re supposed to be the leader of this pack?”

The good news is, even if our dogs judge us, they still love us unconditionally—just maybe with a little side-eye now and then. And as for my Shih Tzu, I guess I’ll just have to work harder to earn the right to see her adorable face again! Treats anyone?
